Over the past decade, as mobile web browsers have become ubiquitous web developers have had to adapt their content to fit a multitude of screen sizes. In the beginning a solution many chose was to create two sites for each client, one desktop and one mobile.
For a brief period, this option, though costly and inefficient, worked. Most mobile browsers were iPhones, and there were only one or two screen resolutions to deal with. Over the years since the launch of the iPhone however, the market for mobile devices has exploded. There are now half a dozen different sizes of iPhone screen and literally hundreds of Android devices, not to mention the different tablets available.
Due to this proliferation, web developers have had to change their approach to the issue. It’s simply not possible to create as many different versions of a site to cater to each device in the ever evolving market. Therefore, the only solution is to use one site for every device, coded so that it recognises the size of the screen being used and rearranges its size and content appropriately.
While this may seem like an incredibly complex task to undertake the reality is much simpler than it sounds. Put very simply the code which builds the website includes instructions such as “if the screen size is greater than X, display the content in a row, if its smaller than X, display in a column”.
This approach ensures that user experience is handled optimally. Text will always be legible, buttons and links will be situation far enough apart (and will be big enough) that they can be individually touched onscreen, images won’t have to be scrolled across and navigation will usually be handled in pop out menus.
So if you’re looking for a new site, what does this mean for you? The good news is that WeDevelop includes mobile responsive design as standard in all our website builds. So whether it’s a simple web presence site, or a sprawling e-commerce site our builds will provide a great experience for users across the board.
